When I first arrived in Nigeria to work with CBMI, I found that patients were charged approximately $100 for cataract surgery. That fee included a four day stay in the hospital, and surgery for the second eye was discounted to $40. I was surprised that most patients could afford the surgery with help from their families. For those patients who needed cataract surgery, but could not afford it, we had a "poor fund" which we could utilize to pay for the patient's surgery.

However if there was an equipment failure, they were in trouble. They continue to rely on Christian Blind Mission Intl for help with capital expenses.
